Before ending the exhibition that has been taking place at the In Situ gallery since 2 February, the sculptor porte renaud (aka Renaud Porte) invites people to join him for the last time. The young artist is back in the premises of the Label Friche association to display a new version of an artwork of his, entitled Préservations d’espèces (Species’ preservations).
“I ask to people interested to come and make a print from a plaster moulding”, explained the sculptor. “The creation is simultaneously made with a personal interview.”
“I keep these prints as many tracks and encounters for an artwork on the go. They will be part of a future version of Monument to the glory of oblivion.” That is to say plaster cubes that other visitors in a coming exhibition will be free to dig to discover the prints created in Nogent.
Practical information
Last visits of porte renaud’s exhibition on Friday and Saturday from 3 to 6pm, at 5 rue du Pâty. The artist will be there on Saturday to conduct a workshop from 3 to 5pm. Free admission.

Porte renaud and his timeless artwoks
“The artist porte renaud depicts the immanent portrait of an unstable humanity by definition. It then results in a corpus of (anti)sculptural artworks in which there are as many gestures involving the artist’s body and space as his contemporaries’. Displayed here and now, in the heart of impermanence able to crystallise the triviality of worried thoughts.”
This is how the art critic Mickael Roy presents the new artist who will exhibit for three weeks at the In Situ Gallery. This artist is porte renaud. His environment is the sculpture/architecture, his story, his present time, his future time… Around the same question: today, how to “exhume” our past cultural legacies and how to activate them for tomorrow…
This artist from Mulhouse comes with five artworks.
Five artworks
The first one, entitled “Monument to the glory of oblivion”, represents three plaster cubes in which have been poured fifty prints previously made.
All over the exhibition, each visitor will be able to take part in the artwork’s fragmentation. They will have to extract a fragment with specific tools. The artist will offer this fragment and a certificate of authenticity to every participant. The second one is a nice reference to In Situ. The gallery represents three columns, two of which are false… “Taking the plunge” will also question the public. It corresponds to sculptures moulded and then carved in plaster and dug in the artists’ garden.
Participative exhibition
Therefore, they will be exhumed for the exhibition. As regards the steel roller “Foyer”, every day of the event it will move forward on trilobites’ prints made of modelling clay.
And finally, “Story”. “It’s a catalogue of the exhibition. It is offered for sale as an exchange medium between the buyer and I. A two-way trip, an exhibition workshop, in order to keep on telling stories”, explains porte renaud. Moreover, the artist invites people to come for the last day of the exhibition in Nogent to “elaborate the artwork entitled “Préservations d’espèces (Species’ preservation). A series of prints that everyone could make. And that I will collect as many tracks of encounters for an artwork on the go…”

Nogent-le-Rotrou / Confusing concept of an endless story
porte renaud uses art to create links
porte renaud is developing a confusing concept and in the complete vein of contemporary art: transformation.
New horizons
Here, nothing is meant to last, but to evolve, change and transform. Don’t look for artworks on the walls of the In Situ gallery. They have already been spread for another life…in visitors’ pockets. “I have arranged five paintings”, explains the young artist.
First of all, blocs to be dispersed and destroyed by visitors to be spread, in small pieces, towards new horizons. The second workshop copies the gallery’s columns, which makes it look like an antic circus. The third painting is exhibited in the second room under the thematic area of the inevitable time destruction. The fourth workshop is completely interactive since both the artist and the visitor participate in the creation of an object.
Finally, a log book is completing the precious link that porte renaud wants to retain with his audience. In this book the creator wants to encourage the visitors to keep a link by writing down their own opinions.
The artist doesn’t consider art as an end in itself by as a social link. “The main objective is to meet, exchange, he explains. This is what I call sculptural practice. The artwork interacts with the other ones. It enables the visitor to take part in it and exchange”.
The object is then a bridge between the creator and the audience. “Destroying is not an objective at all, but just a transition from one state to another. People can bring home a piece of the artwork”.
This concept is really groundbreaking but completely corresponds to contemporary art and the material-orientated world we are living in. “Things have to change, says the young artist. I don’t want to close my work, quite the opposite. The artwork is made so that it will never been ended. It changes, evolves, moves”.

VERNISSAGE / porte renaud, aka Renaud Porte disclosed his exhibition last evening at the In Situ Galley
About fifty visitors came to reactivate the memory
The sculptor exhibits at the In Situ Gallery until 23 February.
Yesterday, about fifty visitors attended a confusing vernissage at the In Situ gallery. This evening was very surprising, equalling the artistic approach proposed by the artist.
porte renaud, aka Renaud Porte, displayed the five artworks composing his Sculpture history, continuation and end. The visual artist, who works on transformation, to begin with his artist name, first confused many people because of the minimalist scope of his works.
Visitors and destroyers
Three plaster blocs laid on the floor, incomplete columns, etc. Visitors had to make effort to understand the whole thing. The 25-year-old sculptor who lives and works in Mulhouse (Haut-Rhin department) started by giving the clues of a work making sense through the participative aspect. People can immediately turn themselves into stakeholders if they agree to overcome the idea of temporality. Some of them even started to destroy what the artist has called Monument to the glory of oblivion. “These plaster blocs have to broken to collect a fragment”, he said. You will be given these prints that you will bring home to start a new cycle.”

“porte renaud” creates an endless story
After high-school students yesterday, the sculptor “porte renaud”* presents his exhibition “Sculpture history: continuation and end”, from 3pm, at the In Situ Gallery.

To destroy to find fragments of the past that will enable to build other memories: this is the life endless cycle represented in sculpture by porte renaud at the In Situ Gallery. The young 25-year-old artist who lives and works in Mulhouse (Haut-Rhin department), invites from today the general public to actively continue this endless story…
Five artworks are shown in this exhibition entitled Sculpture history: continuation and end, but only two of them will be at the heart of the encounter; this afternoon from 3pm. porte renaud will first of all reveal his Monument to the glory of oblivion. “Three plaster cubes in which have been poured fifty prints”, explains the sculptor. “Visitors are asked to extract one of these fragments with tools. They will be offered the fragment and a certificate of authenticity.”
These prints were made by other visitors during a previous exhibition. “This is what I call Préservation d’espèces (Species’ preservation)”, underlined porte renaud. “I ask interested people to make a print from a plaster moulding. This creation is made during an individual interview.”
An invitation to a future time
“I keep these creations to incorporate them into a future version of Monument to the glory of oblivion.” Thus, the artist manages to offer an incredibly rich version through artworks that may look like minimalist. This vision is confusing on the temporality notion. By exhuming all these tracks of cultural heritage, he finally transcends the past, present and future concepts to rewrite a constantly changing story. This endless move does not “invent” but “invites” to a future time.
(*) porte renaud, aka Renaud Porte, doesn’t want to write his artist name in capital letters.
Practical information. Sculpture history: continuation and end, by porte renaud, at the In Situ gallery, 5 rue du Pâty, from today until 23 February. An exhibition that you can see every Friday and Saturday, from 3 to 6pm.
VERNISSAGE
This is a 3-step vernissage which is presented tonight from 6pm at the In Situ gallery. porte renaud will officially activate his Monument to the glory of oblivion as well as the fifth version of Préservation d’espèces (Species’ preservation). Mickaël Roy, a friend and art critic, a mediator at the Mulhouse museum, will present the exhibition and reveal the concept of the interactive catalogue.
EDUCATION
With high school students
Two classes, enrolled in the plastic arts’ option from the Rémi Belleau high school, met porte renaud yesterday. About forty students and their teacher Sylvie Mazereau who have been asked to reflect about the following topics: “the print, between appearance and disappearance” and “the ruin, territory of oblivion and memory”.
Once they immersed themselves in the sculptor’s artworks, the students enjoyed creating an artistic composition with objects taken in the gallery. “Ephemeral creations which had to be structured around my work and find their sense in it,” noted the artist. A successfully carried out challenge by both groups, mainly inspired by the idea of destruction and its result. “It’s very enlightening to meet such a young artist”, stated one of the participants. “We feel close to his point of view.”
